Jim Kogelheide is temporarily a Kentville artist. His stop here, which began last November, is part of a challenge he undertook seven years ago.
The "Canada - Glorious to be" project prompted him to travel Canada and share his talent. He and his wife, Joanne, have so far lived and sought inspirations in four provinces.
Born in northern Quebec in 1970, Kogelheide is half aboriginal by birth. He was adopted as a newborn and grew up in rural Ontario. After high school, he trained in architectural technology and interior design.
Originally, Kogelheide though his project might involve a cross-country trip and conclude with the Millennium. After living and working in Ontario, Manitoba, B.C. and now Nova Scotia, he speculates it may take him 15 years to finish up.
Everywhere he goes, Kogelheide looks for different inspiration. He has experimented in various media, including needlepoint. Right now he's keen to finish developing his web site.
Artistically, Kogelheide has been concentrating on stick man animation, coating doors with art and an emerging form he calls kinemation. "I'm always changing and always learning," he says.
He has a serious interest in environmental issues. He has worked at preserving old-growth forest. "The pendulum swings both ways, but I think that humanity is destined to be positive."
At night he's a bartender at Roxy's; by day Kogelheide likes to "plug into the community". A member of the Alliance of Kings Artists, he hopes to find a local restaurant or store willing to hang his paintings. On leaving a region, he always donates a body of work.
Meanwhile, the affable Kogelheide's work is on display at the Apple Bin Gallery at Valley Regional Hospital throughout August and September.

IT WAS ONLY A FEW SHORT DAYS AFTER THE ARTICLE IN THE ADVERTISER CAME OUT, WHEN I GOT A PHONE CALL. THE OWNERS OF A RESTAURANT IN WOLFVILLE WERE INTERESTED IN HANGING A FEW OF MY ART PEACES ON THEIR WALLS.

TWO DAYS LATER THEY CAME TO MY APARTMENT TO LOOK AT WHAT I HAD AVAILABLE, AND BY THE NEXT DAY FOUR OF MY EARLIER WORKS WERE GRACING THE WALLS OF THE TEMPEST RESTAURANT. THIS OPPORTUNITY WAS VERY UNEXPECTED AND GREATLY APPRECIATED. JOANNE AND I DROPPED IN FOR LUNCH A FEW DAYS LATER, AND THE POSITIVE COMMENTS FROM THE STAFF MADE ME FEEL WONDERFUL. WE ENJOYED THE ELEGANCE OF THE CUISINE WHILE BATHING IN THE AFTERNOON SUN, OUT ON THE PATIO. MY ART WORK WILL BE ON DISPLAY AT THE TEMPEST RESTAURANT, IN DOWNTOWN WOLFVILLE, FOR THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.
BON APPETIT!
